In my editorial design class, we were task to each take the same predetermined content (text and some images) and use our design knowledge to design the layout for an annual report for the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Having used InDesign, one challenge was how to play with type in a unique way in a software that is strictly for layout. I went about it by utilizing spacing, indents, wrapping text around images, all while staying consistent across all the pages of the report. The report was designed for donors and stakeholders of the National Museum of Natural History as well as the general public.
One challenge was on coming up with a cover that would invoke wonder but also encompass the mission of the museum
Content ranged from groups, organizations, events, as well as financial and exhibition.
Also, content featured historical information regarding creatures that roamed the world long before humans did.
Using combinations of colors, textures, images, shapes and organic lines, the annual report is the combination of information and design, working together to create wonder and excitement.
